Prairie Abstractions by Hugh G. Rice

Last week 15 new paintings arrived by local artist Hugh G. Rice. His series of abstract prairie landscapes are created entirely without brushes.

The Road I'm On, 48x48 mixed media on canvas by Hugh G. Rice

He uses sprays and a variety of other applications instead of the traditional paint brush, also adding, removing and moving the paint around with found objects from his studio.

Not Moving From Here, 40x40 mixed media on canvas by Hugh G. Rice
Much like the weather on the prairies these days, these new works are very moody. People in the gallery are commenting that they see storms coming, storms clearing, northern lights and lots of movement in these pieces. You can view more paintings by Hugh G. Rice here

Can you relate to the moody weather in these paintings?

Um, yes. Okay, I mean at times! I definitely feel lots of change in the fall air and I'm getting a little more introspective and preparing mentally for a cozy winter. I'm amazed that he does those without a brush!

Wow- gorgeous-
I love the vibe and the depth he is able to create in his landscapes.
Interesting choice to not use a paint brush!

Thanks for sharing these.
